About
Fran Bennett (August 14, 1937 – September 12, 2021) was an American actress born in Malvern, Arkansas, whose career spanned Broadway, television, and film across six decades. Bennett died in Los Angeles on September 12, 2021, at the age of 84.
Bennett began her career in theater and made her television debut on the daytime soap opera Guiding Light. Her Broadway work took place between 1961 and 1968 and included appearances in Mandingo, Choephori, and The Octoroon.
Her television career encompassed a wide range of roles in both daytime and prime-time programming. She held a regular role in the NBC medical drama Nightingales in 1989 and accumulated guest-starring credits on Roots: The Next Generations, Lou Grant, Dallas, Falcon Crest, Knots Landing, L.A. Law, and Dynasty. Bennett also appeared in recurring capacities on the daytime dramas General Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful, and Sunset Beach, as well as the prime-time series Quantum Leap, In the Heat of the Night, Crisis Center, and The Book of Daniel. Additional television appearances included Boston Legal, ER, Becker, Scandal, and an episode of Remington Steele that aired on January 14, 1986, in which she played a coroner. In 2019, Bennett portrayed Mother Olivia Jefferson in a re-creation of the pilot episode of The Jeffersons for Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear's All in the Family and The Jeffersons, appearing alongside Jamie Foxx as George Jefferson, Wanda Sykes as Louise Jefferson, Kerry Washington as Helen Willis, and Will Ferrell as Tom Willis.
Bennett's film credits include Promises in the Dark (1979), How I Got Into College (1989), The Doctor (1991), Plymouth (1991), New Nightmare (1994), Foxfire (1996), The Next Best Thing (2000), and Jessabelle (2014). From 1996 to 2003, she served as head of the performance program in the School of Theater at the California Institute of the Arts.
