About

Antonio Fernández Díaz, known professionally as Fosforito, was born on 3 August 1932 in Puente Genil, Córdoba Province, Spain, and died on 13 November 2025, at the age of 93. A Spanish flamenco singer, he earned distinction as the winner of the fifth Golden Key of flamenco singing, one of only five such awards granted since the honor was established in 1862.

The Golden Key of flamenco singing has been bestowed on a small number of artists across its history. The four previous recipients were Tomás "El Nitri," Manuel Vallejo, Antonio Mairena, and Camarón de la Isla, the last of whom received the award posthumously. Fosforito received the fifth Golden Key in 2005.

His Broadway career included an appearance in 1966, with credits featuring Manuela Vargas.

Over the course of his career, Fosforito accumulated a substantial discography. Among his recordings are Cante y guitarra, made in collaboration with Paco de Lucía and released in 1999, Misa flamenca from 1994, and Misa flamenca en Córdoba from 2003. He also released multiple volumes of Selección antológica and the album Cristal suelto in 2002. Earlier recordings are documented in Grabaciones históricas, Vol. 34, capturing material from Córdoba in 1956.

His work was recognized through numerous awards spanning several decades. In 1968, the Cátedra de Flamencología of Jerez presented him with the Premio Nacional de Cante. He subsequently received the Mercedes la Serneta award in 1977, the II Compás de Cante in 1985, and the Pastora Pavón Niña de los peines Award from the Andalusian autonomous government in 1999. Additional honors include the Premio Ondas, the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts in 2007, the Premio Leyenda del Flamenco in 2013, and the titles of Favourite and Gold Medal of his hometown of Puente Genil.
