About
Flower Hujer (September 30, 1907 – May 1, 1999) was an American dancer, choreographer, and Broadway performer whose career spanned several decades of the twentieth century.
Born in Hollywood, Hujer trained in ballet under Theodore Kosloff and launched her early career in ballet and film work on the West Coast. In the early 1940s she relocated to Manhattan, where she transitioned into Broadway musical theater. Her stage credits included two musicals produced between 1942 and 1944: By Jupiter and Jackpot. During this period she also toured the United States in musical theater productions.
In 1949 Hujer founded the Flower Hujer Dance Theater, through which she developed a body of choreographic work centered on religious and nature themes, recognized for their dignity and simplicity. She also created choreography for musical theater. Among the dancers who performed with her company was Louis Falco, a noted dancer and choreographer, who worked with the group during the 1960s.
Hujer remained active as a performer into her later years, continuing to appear onstage until 1990. She died on May 1, 1999, in Queens, New York, at the age of 92.
