About

Florence Short (May 19, 1893 – July 10, 1946) was an American actress whose career spanned stage and film across several decades. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, she relocated with her family to New York City during childhood, where she received her education at the Finch School for Girls.

Short launched her professional career in 1910 with the Avenue Stock Company of Wilmington, Delaware. Her early Broadway work included appearances in Thompson Buchanan's The Bridal Path and George V. Hobart's Experience. She went on to maintain a presence on Broadway from 1913 through 1933, with credits encompassing Abraham Lincoln, Uncle Tom's Cabin, To-Night at 12, Starlight, and Drifting, among other productions.

Concurrent with her stage work, Short built a substantial career as a supporting actress in film. Her earliest screen appearances came in Damaged Goods (1914), in which she played a nurse, and The Law That Failed (1917). She continued working steadily in silent film throughout the late 1910s and into the 1920s, taking on roles in productions including A Man's World (1918), in which she played Lione Brune, The Eagle's Eye (1918) as Madame Augusta, and Kildare of Storm (1918) as Mahaly. Her later film credits included The Love Flower (1920), Silver Wings (1921), Woman's Place (1922), Does It Pay? (1923), and The Enchanted Cottage (1924), in which she appeared as Ethel.

Short died on July 10, 1946, at her home in Hollywood and is buried in Los Angeles.
