About
Florence MacMichael (April 26, 1919 – May 28, 1999) was an American actress who worked across stage, film, and television over several decades. Born in Hagerstown, Maryland, to Mary (née Wahl) and Roy A. MacMichael, she trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City before beginning her professional career in local radio and theater.
MacMichael's Broadway career spanned from 1941 to 1958 and included appearances in a range of productions. Her credits encompassed the comedy The Snark Was a Boojum, the drama Proof Thro' the Night, Out of the Frying Pan, On the Town, and the comedy Auntie Mame. Her work in Out of the Frying Pan proved particularly consequential, as her role in that Broadway production led directly to her first film appearance in the 1943 screen adaptation, released as Young and Willing.
Her subsequent film work included Woman Obsessed (1959), The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit (1968), and Welcome Home, Soldier Boys (1972). On television, MacMichael accumulated a substantial body of work. She held a recurring role as Florence Pearson in My Three Sons from 1960 to 1961 and appeared as Winnie Kirkwood in Mister Ed from 1963 to 1965, the role for which she became best known. She also portrayed Barney Fife's girlfriend in two episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and appeared on Alfred Hitchcock Presents, on The Twilight Zone in the episode "Mr. Bevis," and on the Western series The Tall Man in the episode "Millionaire MacBean." Additional television credits include Bachelor Father, Dennis the Menace, The Donna Reed Show, and Alcoa Premiere.
Beyond performing, MacMichael was active in regional theater as both an actress and a director. She founded the Sierra Madre Studio Players and worked at the Pasadena Playhouse. By the late 1970s she had moved into teaching, instructing stage acting at the Pasadena Repertory Theatre inside The Hotel Carver. MacMichael was married twice, first to Sebryn Myers and then to James McCoy, and had one son and one daughter. She died in Cambria, San Luis Obispo County, California, in 1999 at the age of 80.
