About
Fiona Shaw, born Fiona Mary Wilson on 10 July 1958 in Cobh, County Cork, Ireland, is an Irish actress whose career spans stage, film, and television. The daughter of physicist Mary T. Wilson and ophthalmic surgeon Denis Joseph Wilson, she grew up in a family home in Montenotte and attended secondary school at Scoil Mhuire in Cork before earning a philosophy degree from University College Cork. She subsequently trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating in 1982 with an Acting diploma. Upon joining Equity, she was required to change her surname, as the union already had a member named Fiona Wilson. She chose Shaw, her grandmother's maiden name, partly as a tribute to George Bernard Shaw.
Shaw built her early stage career through extensive work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. Her theatrical credits include Julia in the National Theatre production of The Rivals in 1983, Celia in As You Like It in 1984, Madame de Volanges in Les Liaisons Dangereuses in 1985, and Katherine in The Taming of the Shrew in 1987. She won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress twice, first in 1990 for her work in Electra and The Good Person of Szechwan, and again in 1994 for Machinal. She received three additional Olivier Award nominations for Mephisto in 1986, Hedda Gabler in 1992, and Happy Days in 2008. In 1995, she took on the male lead in Richard II, directed by Deborah Warner, a collaborator with whom she also worked on productions of Brecht's The Good Woman of Szechwan and Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. In 2009, the two collaborated again on Tony Kushner's translation of Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children. Shaw performed T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land as a one-person show at the Liberty Theatre in New York in 1996, winning the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding One-Person Show. In November 2010, she starred in Ibsen's John Gabriel Borkman at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, alongside Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan, a production that transferred to Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2011. She appeared in the National Theatre revival of Scenes from an Execution by Howard Barker in 2012.
Shaw made her Broadway debut in 2002 in the title role of Medea, earning a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play nomination and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play nomination, both in 2003. She returned to Broadway in 2013 in The Testament of Mary, based on the play by Colm Tóibín. Her performance in that production was recognized by United Solo, the world's largest solo theatre festival, with its 2013 United Solo Special Award.
In film, Shaw appeared in My Left Foot in 1989, Persuasion in 1995, and Jane Eyre in 1996, among other productions. She is widely recognized for playing Petunia Dursley, Harry Potter's maternal aunt, across five films in the Harry Potter series between 2001 and 2010. Additional film credits include The Tree of Life in 2011, Colette in 2018, Ammonite in 2020, and Enola Holmes in 2020. In 2020, The Irish Times ranked her 29th on its list of Ireland's greatest film actors.
On television, Shaw played Hedda Hopper in the HBO film RKO 281 in 1999 and Marnie Stonebrook in the HBO series True Blood in 2011. Beginning in 2018, she portrayed Carolyn Martens, the head of MI6's Russia-focused branch, in the BBC series Killing Eve, a role she continued through 2022. Her performance earned her the 2019 BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress as well as two Primetime Emmy Award nominations. For her role as a counselor in Fleabag in 2019, she received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series nomination. She starred in the BBC One series Baptiste in 2021 and appeared in the Disney+ series Andor in 2022, playing Maarva Andor, the titular character's adoptive mother, a performance that earned her a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination. In 2024, she appeared in season four of True Detective as Rose Aguineau. In October 2022, she received an AudioFile Magazine Earphone Award for her audio performance of The Bullet That Missed, the third book in Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club series.
Shaw was appointed an Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2001. She married Sri Lankan economist Sonali Deraniyagala in 2018, having met her after reading Deraniyagala's memoir. Shaw resides in Islington, North London.
