About

Fay Dora Marbe (February 4, 1899 – June 2, 1986) was an American actress, singer, and dancer who worked across vaudeville, Broadway, film, and the European stage. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of William Marbe, a German immigrant and merchant who died in 1923 after being struck by a subway train. Marbe claimed in interviews that her family moved in elite New York social circles, counting the Astors and Enrico Caruso among their acquaintances.

Marbe's entry into professional performance came in 1917, when producer William Elliott spotted her at a charity event and cast her as second lead dancer in Jerome Kern's Oh, Boy! She subsequently performed alongside Janette Hackett in a production built around Nora Bayes. Critics recognized her as a skilled singer and dancer, and her physical presence and stage presentation drew considerable press attention early in her career.

Her Broadway work spanned from 1919 to 1924. She appeared in the musicals The Velvet Lady and The Magic Melody, both in 1919, followed by Innocent, The Hotel Mouse in 1922, and the revue Topics of 1923. In 1920, she also worked in Hollywood, appearing as a dancer in the film The Very Idea.

Following her Broadway years, Marbe traveled to Europe, where she performed on the London stage and appeared in several German films, among them Fritz Freisler's 1928 silent film Dorine und der Zufall. After returning to the United States, she appeared in the 1929 comedy The Talk of Hollywood alongside her brother Gilbert, with whom she had previously shared a vaudeville act.

By 1930, her film work had not found commercial success, and efforts to establish herself as a cabaret performer were similarly unsuccessful. She retired from performance shortly thereafter. Marbe spent her later years in New York before relocating to Fairfield, Connecticut, where she died on June 2, 1986, at the age of 87.
