About

Fay Davis (December 15, 1872 – March 1, 1945) was an American stage actress born in Boston, Massachusetts, who built a career spanning both sides of the Atlantic, with particular distinction in Shakespearean roles. She received her early education at the Winthrop School in Boston and at a school of oratory, and studied under the monologist Leland Powers. Before pursuing a professional career, Davis established herself as a popular reciter in Boston and throughout New England, and gained amateur acting experience in her hometown.

In 1895 Davis traveled to England to join Charles Wyndham's company, where she achieved early success playing Zoe Nuggetson in A Squire of Dames. The following year she moved to the St. James's Theatre, where she remained for five years and first took on roles in Shakespearean productions. During this period she also appeared in a number of London plays, including Rupert of Hentzau, A Debt of Honour, The Wisdom of the Wise, Iris, and Caesar's Wife.

Davis returned to the United States in 1902 and made her American debut at the Empire Theatre under producer Charles Frohman, appearing as Wilhelmina in Imprudence. Her Broadway career extended from 1902 to 1906 and included productions such as The House of Mirth, The Duel, Man and Superman, Mrs. Leffingwell's Boots, and The Rich Mrs. Repton. She returned to England in 1906, performing first in the provinces and subsequently in London, where she took leading roles in Henry V, Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, and Twelfth Night. In 1910 she appeared in Trelawny of the Wells in London.

Davis expanded into film in 1914 with an appearance in an adaptation of Enoch Arden. During World War I she performed in Searchlights and Daddy Long-Legs. Her later London stage work included The Heart of a Child in 1921, The Second Mrs. Tanqueray in 1922, Secret Service in 1926, Hamlet in 1930, and both The Shadow Princess and On the Rocks in 1933. Her final professional engagement was at the Winter Garden Theatre in London in 1933, though she made two additional onstage appearances at wartime fundraising galas in 1939 and 1942.

Davis was married to the actor Gerald Lawrence. Their daughter, Marjorie Fay Lawrence, born in 1908, was murdered in 1930. Davis died in Exmouth, England in 1945 at the age of 72.
