About
Joseph Farren Soutar was born on 17 February 1870 in Greenwich, London, into a theatrical family. His father, Robert Soutar, worked as an actor, stage manager, and director, while his mother, Nellie Farren, was a celebrated actress and singer renowned for her roles as the principal boy in musical burlesques at the Gaiety Theatre. His older brother was Henry Robert Soutar (1868–1928). Among his boyhood companions was George Arliss, who would later appear alongside Soutar in the 1934 film The Iron Duke; it was Arliss who helped Soutar secure his first acting job in 1886. Soutar died on 23 January 1962 in Cookham, Berkshire, at the age of 91, and was buried beside his mother in Brompton Cemetery.
A baritone leading man, Soutar built his early career performing in Edwardian musical comedies on the London stage. His West End credits included Bobbie Rivers in A Gaiety Girl (1894), Algernon St. Alban in An Artist's Model at the Lyric Theatre (1895), and Dick Cunningham in The Geisha at Daly's Theatre (1897). He also appeared in the parody A Model Trilby; or, A Day or Two After Du Maurier at the Opera Comique in 1895, a production staged by his then-retired mother. Additional London appearances included Lieut. Crosby in The Wrong Mr. Wright at the Strand Theatre (1899), Michael Brue in Sergeant Brue at the Royal Strand Theatre (1904), Tom Hatherton in Howard Talbot's A Chinese Honeymoon at the Royal Strand Theatre (1903), and the Hon. Raymond Finchley in The Belle of Mayfair at the Vaudeville Theatre (1906). In June 1906, Soutar was among a group of notable comedians who participated in a Minstrel Entertainment as part of the jubilee celebrations for Ellen Terry.
Soutar's Broadway career spanned from 1901 to 1911. He made his New York debut playing Jack Hemingway in The Girl from Up There at the Lyceum Theatre in 1901. He subsequently appeared as the Duke of St. Jermyns in The Catch of the Season at Daly's Theatre in New York in 1905. Now in his forties, Soutar played the Hon. James Bendoyle in Peggy at the Casino Theatre in New York in 1911. His Broadway credits also include The Girl from Utah.
Following his Broadway years, Soutar continued working in London. He appeared in the revues Review of Revues (1912) and Everybody's Doing It at the Empire Theatre (1912), acted in Who's the Lady? at the Garrick Theatre (1913), and played Stephen Gale in The Greatest Wish at the Garrick (1912–1913). In December 1914, during World War I, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 8th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. After the war, he resumed performing, appearing in Her Husband's Wife at the Globe Theatre (1920–1921) and Bluebeard's Eighth Wife at the Prince's Theatre, Bristol (1923–1924). Later stage work included a role as an extra in Hamlet at the Drury Lane Theatre (1944) and an appearance in A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Haymarket Theatre (1944–1945). His final recorded stage appearance was as the Gentleman with Gout in Crime and Punishment at the New Theatre in 1946.
In 1934, Soutar made three film appearances: Metternich in The Iron Duke, Lord Louis in The Crucifix, and John Hillcrest in The Black Abbot. On 27 July 1908, he married Edith May Hobson (1884–1954) at St. Paul's Church in Hammersmith. In July 1921, Soutar initiated divorce proceedings against his wife, alleging she had committed adultery with actor Robert Leonard (1888–1948) during the run of Business Before Pleasure (1918–1919) at the Savoy Theatre; the case was dismissed for lack of evidence. Following Edith's death in 1954, Soutar married actress Dorothy Lane, born in 1890, that same year.
