Faran Haroon Tahir is an American actor born in Los Angeles to Naeem Tahir, a veteran actor and writer, and Yasmeen Tahir, described as one of the most famous voices of Radio Pakistan. His maternal grandparents are writers Imtiaz Ali Taj and Hijab Imtiaz Ali, the first Muslim female pilot. Tahir grew up in Pakistan before returning to the United States in 1980. His younger brothers are also in the entertainment industry: Ali Tahir is an actor known for the comedy-drama sitcom Teen Bata Teen, and Mehran Tahir is a television producer who has worked for Hum TV.
Tahir studied business economics at the University of California, Berkeley before shifting his focus to the performing arts and earning a degree in theatre. He subsequently completed an MFA at the American Repertory Theater's Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University.
His film career began with the role of Nathoo in Disney's 1994 live-action adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. He went on to appear in Picture Perfect (1997), Anywhere But Here (1999), the 1999 independent film ABCD, and Charlie Wilson's War (2007). In 2008, he portrayed the villain Raza in the Marvel film Iron Man, followed by the role of Starfleet Captain Richard Robau in Star Trek (2009) and President Patel in the science-fiction film Elysium (2013). He also starred in the ghost horror film Jinn and appeared in the 2005 Sci-Fi Channel film Manticore alongside Robert Beltran and Chase Masterson.
Tahir's television work spans a wide range of series, including Alias, The Practice, Family Law, The Agency, NYPD Blue, Lost, 7th Heaven, The West Wing, Walker Texas Ranger, The D.A., 24, Monk, Justice, Cold Case, Chuck, Hawaii Five-0, and Warehouse 13. He appeared in the JAG episodes "Ice Queen" and "Meltdown," which served as the pilot episodes for NCIS, and later appeared in the spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles. He played Isaac in Grey's Anatomy, the Egyptian god Osiris in the seventh-season Supernatural episode "Defending Your Life," and Frank in the revival of Dallas. In 2015 he appeared as the Commander on Supergirl, and in 2016 he joined American Crime as Rhys Bashir and was cast as Captain Nemo on Once Upon a Time. He played Mallick in Syfy's 12 Monkeys in 2017. In January 2019, during a visit to Karachi, he appeared in the web series Speak Your Heart With Samina Peerzada.
On the stage, Tahir played the title role in a 2016 production of Othello for the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. He made his Broadway debut in 2022 in The Kite Runner.
