About

Fanny Carby (2 February 1925 – 20 September 2002) was a British character actress born in Sutton, England. A founding member of Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, Carby built her career across stage, film, and television over several decades.

Her stage work included the production Oh, What a Lovely War, which she performed in London before bringing it to Broadway in 1964. She also appeared in the film adaptation of the production, directed by Richard Attenborough.

On British television, Carby made two separate appearances on Coronation Street, first playing Mary Hornigold in 1965 and later returning in 1987 as Amy Burton, the domineering mother of Vera Duckworth, a role she continued into 1988. Her other television credits included the Coronation Street spin-off Pardon the Expression, On the Buses, Sykes, The Bill, In Sickness and in Health, and Goodnight Sweetheart.
