About
Fanny Addison Pitt, born Fanny Addison in Birmingham, England, in December 1847, was an English actress who built a career spanning both the London and New York stages. The eldest daughter of comedian Edward Phillips Addison, she was also the sister of actress Carlotta Addison. She is additionally identified in records as Mrs. Henry Mader Pitt.
Pitt's early stage work took place in London, where she appeared at the Adelphi Theatre in 1867. The following year she performed at the Queen's Theatre, Long Acre, in La Vivandière, a work by W. S. Gilbert. In 1870 she returned to Gilbert's material, taking the role of Lady Psyche in The Princess. By 1881 she had made her way to New York, establishing a presence on the American stage that would define the later decades of her career.
Her Broadway career extended from 1888 to 1916 and encompassed a range of productions. Among her credits were Lord Chumley, in which she starred, as well as David Garrick, A Bachelor's Romance, and the play Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines. Her appearance in Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines in 1901 placed her alongside Sydney Cowell and Ethel Barrymore, as documented in photographs taken during both the dress rehearsal and the run of that production.
Pitt died on 7 January 1937.
