About
Faith Brook (16 February 1922 – 11 March 2012) was an English actress born in York, England, who worked across stage, film, and television over the course of a lengthy career. Though born in England, she was raised in Hollywood, the daughter of actor Clive Brook. Her brother, Lyndon Brook, was also an actor. Brook received her education in Los Angeles, London, and Gstaad, Switzerland, and as a teenager trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Brook made her stage debut in September 1941 in Lottie Dundass in Santa Barbara. That same year she appeared on Broadway in Letters to Lucerne, marking the beginning of a Broadway career that extended through 1950 and included You Never Can Tell in 1947 and The Cocktail Party in 1949. During World War II, Brook served in Britain's Auxiliary Territorial Service. Following her military service, she performed with the Bristol Old Vic and subsequently joined the company of The Old Vic in London. Her stage work continued well into later life, with appearances in The Colour of Poppies and Uncle Vanya on the London stage in 2008.
Her screen debut came with a small role in Suspicion in 1941, and her first credited film appearance followed in The Jungle Book in 1942. The Encyclopedia of British Film noted that she was cast almost invariably in well-bred roles, a characterization consistent with her stage work in upper-class parts throughout her career.
On television, Brook played Julia Naughton in the American series Claudia in 1952. Her British television credits included War and Peace on the BBC in 1972 and The Irish RM on Channel 4. She also appeared in a BBC radio broadcast of The Reluctant Peer by William Douglas-Home in 1967.
Brook was married twice, first to Charles Moffett and later to Michael Horowitz, with whom she had a son. She was a supporter of the British Humanist Association.
