About
Evelyn Campbell, also known as Evelyn Murray Campbell, was an American actress, writer, and screenwriter who worked during Hollywood's silent era and appeared on Broadway in the early 1920s.
Born in Kansas to J.C. Murray, a lawyer, and Maggie Parker, Campbell grew up in Missouri, where she developed an early preference for reading over other childhood pursuits. Following high school, she took work as a stenographer in St. Louis while simultaneously pursuing her writing ambitions. Around 1918, she began placing her stories with East Coast magazines, and her work soon attracted the attention of film studios seeking material for screen adaptations. Her journalism credits included contributions to the Chicago Examiner, The Denver Post, the Dramatic Mirror in New York, and the San Francisco Dramatic and Musical Review.
Campbell subsequently relocated to California to study scenario-writing, and over the course of her career she sold more than 18 scripts to various studios, among them Universal. She also authored a number of Western novels.
Her stage career brought her to Broadway between 1921 and 1922. She appeared in the revue Ziegfeld Follies of 1918 and the revue Make It Snappy, the latter staged in 1922.
In her personal life, Campbell was married to James Floyd Denison, and the couple had a son.
