About

Eugene Cowles (January 17, 1860 – September 22, 1948) was a Canadian operetta singer and actor whose Broadway career spanned from 1897 to 1919. Among his stage credits were productions of Patience, The Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinafore, Marrying Mary, and The Boys and Betty.

One of Cowles's most notable stage achievements was creating the role of Sándor in The Fortune Teller in 1898. That same year, he recorded Victor Herbert's "Gypsy Love Song," a recording that was later added to the National Recording Registry in 2004.

Cowles began his recording career in 1898 and remained active in the medium through 1921. He is particularly associated with the ballad "Forgotten," a composition of his own that was recorded by numerous artists during the first decade of the twentieth century. His 1906 Victor recording of the song remained in print for more than twenty years.
