Ethel Jewett

Ethel Jewett (September 8, 1877 – December 8, 1944) was an American actress and model whose career spanned Broadway, silent film, and stage work across the United States. Born in Portland, Oregon, she received her education in Portland and later in San Francisco, California.

Jewett's stage career brought her to Broadway between 1900 and 1907, where she appeared in a range of productions including the musical Twirly Whirly, the musical My Lady's Maid, the burlesque Humming Birds and Onions, the musical The Wild Rose, and From Across the Pond, among other productions. In late 1901, she joined a stage company led by Don Daly, performing with the troupe at the Garrick Theatre in Philadelphia in December of that year in a production of The New Yorkers. By 1906, she was appearing at the Weber Music Hall in New York City. Alongside her stage work, Jewett also worked as a model during this period.

Beginning in 1910, Jewett transitioned into silent film, working with several prominent studios including American Biograph, Gaumont, Famous Players, and Thanhouser, as well as the Edison Stock Company. Her film appearances included The Land Beyond the Sunset (1912), L'article 47 (1913), The Undertow (1915), and Fairy Fern Seed (1915). Her screen work brought her considerable public recognition; in a December 1915 popularity contest sponsored by the New York Sunday Telegraph, she finished as runner-up to Clara Kimball Young and was awarded an Overland automobile. In 1916, Jewett relocated to New York City, residing on 207th Street in the Bronx for several years. She died in Los Angeles, California on December 8, 1944.
