About

Esther Dale (November 10, 1885 – July 23, 1961) was an American actress who built careers across the concert stage, Broadway, film, and television. Born in Beaufort, South Carolina, she received her early education at Leland and Gray Seminary in Townshend, Vermont, before traveling to Berlin, Germany, to study music. That training launched a successful career as a lieder singer on the concert stage, with appearances alongside the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. At one point, Dale also served as head of the vocal department at Smith College.

Her transition from music to acting led her first into summer stock before she established herself on Broadway, where she appeared in productions spanning 1932 to 1948. Her Broadway debut came with Another Language in 1932, and she went on to appear in Carry Nation in 1933, By Your Leave, Spring Freshet, And Be My Love in 1944, and Harvest of Years in 1947, among other productions.

Dale entered film with an uncredited role in Crime Without Passion in 1934. She became particularly associated with the Ma and Pa Kettle film series, playing Birdie Hicks in The Egg and I (1947), Ma and Pa Kettle (1949), Ma and Pa Kettle at the Fair (1952), and Ma and Pa Kettle at Waikiki (1955).

Television occupied a significant portion of her later career. In 1957, she appeared opposite James Garner in the Maverick episode "According to Hoyle" and guest-starred in the Wagon Train episode "The Julie Gage Story" as Grandma Birch. During the 1958–1959 season of The Donna Reed Show, she played a housekeeper frightened from the Stone home by a pet mouse, and she appeared in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis as a landlady named Mrs. Finch.

Dale died on July 23, 1961, following surgery at Queen of Angels Hospital in Hollywood. Her husband, writer-director Arthur J. Beckhard, had died four months before her.
