Estelle Hemsley (May 5, 1887 – November 5, 1968) was an African American actress born in Boston, Massachusetts, whose career spanned stage and screen across several decades. She maintained an active Broadway presence from 1936 to 1956, appearing in a range of dramatic productions while also building a substantial body of film work.
Hemsley's stage credits included The Case of Philip Lawrence, Tobacco Road, Take a Giant Step, Mrs. Patterson, and Too Late the Phalarope, among other productions. Her role in Take a Giant Step extended beyond the stage, as she also appeared in the 1959 film adaptation directed by Philip Leacock, a performance that earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Her film career brought her into collaboration with several notable directors. She appeared as the mother of Ruby Dee in the 1957 film Edge of the City and took the role of Cla-Cla in Mel Ferrer's 1959 production Green Mansions. In 1963, she played Grandmother Topouzoglou in Elia Kazan's America, America, a film that received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Two years later, she appeared as Catherine in Robert Mulligan's Baby the Rain Must Fall (1965).
