About

Esme Church (11 February 1893 – 31 May 1972) was a British actress, theatre director, and drama educator born in Marylebone, London, to Annie and Henry George Church, whose father worked as a solicitor. She trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and at RADA, and went on to build a career spanning stage performance, directing, and theatrical education across more than four decades.

Church's earliest professional work came during World War I, when Lena Ashwell invited her in 1916 to join a concert party entertaining troops in France and, following the armistice, in Germany. Her London appearances in the early 1920s included poetry recitals at the Æolian Hall in 1920 and a production of Cicely Hampton's The Child in Flanders at the Lyric, Hammersmith in 1921, the first of several seasons with the Lena Ashwell Players. In 1926 she took the title role in St. John Ervine's Jane Clegg at the Century Theatre, earning recognition described as "high distinction" for her portrayal of a bored housewife.

In 1927 Church joined Lilian Baylis's Old Vic company, where her first season encompassed a wide range of classical roles: Viola in Twelfth Night, Lady Macbeth opposite John Laurie, Mistress Page in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Gertrude in Hamlet, and Mrs. Malaprop in Sheridan. She returned to the role of Gertrude in 1933, this time in William Bridges-Adams's production of Hamlet at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, opposite Anew McMaster. Between those Old Vic engagements, she served as artistic director of the Greyhound Theatre in Croydon from 1931 for two years, then rejoined the West End in a company led by Tyrone Guthrie, appearing in a long run of Dorothy Massingham's The Lake.

Church's directing career at the Old Vic gained particular prominence in October 1936, when Baylis invited her back to helm a celebrated production of As You Like It featuring Michael Redgrave and Edith Evans. She subsequently directed Ghosts, an Old Vic production staged at the Vaudeville Theatre that was later presented for television. Alongside her directing work, she helped establish the Old Vic Theatre School and the Young Vic, a touring company aimed at young audiences that served as a forerunner of the present-day theatre of the same name.

In 1944 Church accepted the position of artistic director at the Bradford Civic Playhouse, where she founded the Northern Theatre School at 26 Chapel Street, using the playhouse's facilities. The school attracted students who went on to notable careers, among them Tom Bell, William Gaunt, Dorothy Heathcote, Bernard Hepton, Donald Howarth, Bryan Mosley, Edward Petherbridge, Robert Stephens, Billie Whitelaw, and Robert Fyfe.

Church continued to perform and direct outside Bradford throughout this period. In 1955, again working under Guthrie's direction, she played Flora Van Husen in The Matchmaker, a comedy that transferred from the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London to the Royale Theatre in New York, marking her Broadway appearance. Her final stage credit came in 1962, when she appeared as Madame de Rosemond in the Royal Shakespeare Company's The Art of Seduction, John Barton's adaptation of Les Liaisons dangereuses, at the Aldwych Theatre.

Church retired first to Kent and then to Quenington, Gloucestershire, where she died on 31 May 1972 at the age of 79. On 5 June 2025, Historic England unveiled a national Blue plaque in her memory at 26 Chapel Street, Bradford, the site of the Northern Theatre School she had founded and led.
