About
Esai Manuel Morales Jr. was born on October 1, 1962, in Brooklyn, New York, to Esai Morales Sr., a welder, and Iris Margarita (née Declet), a union activist with the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union. Of Puerto Rican descent, Morales pursued formal training at the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan, and his earliest professional work took place in theater and television in New York.
Morales made his Broadway debut in 1992, appearing in the play Salome. That same year he also played Nicholas Walker in the film Ultraviolet. His first major film role had come nearly a decade earlier, in Bad Boys (1983), a drama about rival teenagers placed in a juvenile correction facility. He went on to co-star with Burt Lancaster in the 1986 NBC miniseries On Wings of Eagles, portraying an Iranian character named Rashid at the center of a true story involving Ross Perot. In 1987, Morales played Bob Morales — the real-life ex-convict and biker half-brother of rock and roll singer Ritchie Valens — in La Bamba, opposite Lou Diamond Phillips.
Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Morales accumulated a wide range of film and television credits. His film work during this period included Bloodhounds of Broadway (1989), Rapa-Nui (1994), The Burning Season (1994), In the Army Now (1994), My Family/Mi Familia (1995), Dogwatch (1996), The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca (1997), and Southern Cross (1999). On television, he made appearances on Miami Vice, The Equalizer, Fame, The Outer Limits, and Tales from the Crypt, among other series.
Morales joined the main cast of the long-running series NYPD Blue in 2001, portraying Lieutenant Tony Rodriguez, the head of the 15th precinct detective squad, a role he held for three and a half seasons through 2004. He also appeared in the Showtime series Resurrection Blvd. from 2000 to 2002, and in the PBS drama series American Family in 2002. In 2006, he joined the Fox series Vanished as FBI agent Michael Tyner. His television work continued with appearances on Burn Notice in 2007, Jericho in 2008, and 24.
Morales played Joseph Adama in Caprica, the Syfy prequel to Battlestar Galactica, which aired in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, he starred in the drama film Gun Hill Road as Enrique, and worked alongside Tony Plana, Yvonne DeLaRosa, Lupe Ontiveros, and JC Gonzalez in the web drama Los Americans on PIC.tv. Robert Rodriguez cast him as Lord Amancio Malvado in the second season of From Dusk till Dawn: The Series in 2015. In 2017, Morales took on the role of Camino del Rio in the first season of the Netflix series Ozark, and in 2019 he portrayed Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in the second season of the DC Universe series Titans.
Morales appeared as Gabriel, the main antagonist, in the 2023 spy action film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, opposite Tom Cruise. He reprised the role in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning in 2025.
In 2005, Morales and Mercedes Ruehl jointly received the Rita Moreno HOLA Award for Excellence from the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arpa Foundation for Film, Music and Art. Morales has identified himself as an "actorvist" and is one of the founders of the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, citing his mother's union organizing as an inspiration. He was also a founding board member of E.C.O. (Earth Communications Office), reflecting his interest in environmental issues. Morales has a daughter, born in 2010 with his girlfriend Elvimar Silva.
