About
Erwin Kalser was a German-Jewish stage and film actor born Erwin Kalischer in Berlin on 22 February 1883. He died on 26 March 1958.
Kalser began his career in Munich shortly after the turn of the century. Following the rise of the Nazi regime, he relocated to Switzerland in 1933 to continue working in theatre. He first traveled to the United States in 1937, returning in 1940 and eventually becoming an American citizen.
His Broadway credits include Another Sun, which he appeared in during 1940, as well as Androcles and the Lion. The majority of his professional output was concentrated in American film productions. Among his screen roles, he is perhaps best remembered for portraying the Geneva Convention inspector in Stalag 17.
Kalser was married to film writer Irmgard von Cube. He is the father of Konstantin Kalser, an Oscar-winning producer.
