About
Erin Kathleen Hill is an American actress, harpist, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist whose career spans Broadway, film, television, and recording. She appeared on Broadway between 1997 and 2001, with credits including Titanic, Cabaret, and Urinetown.
Hill originated the role of Kate Mullins in the Broadway production of Titanic, and the role of Lulu in the Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall revival of Cabaret. She appears on the Original Broadway Cast recordings of both productions, contributing vocals, harp, flute, and saxophone to the Cabaret album and vocals to the Titanic recording. Both cast albums were released on RCA. She also performed at the 51st Annual Tony Awards in 1997, where she sang "Ship of Dreams," and at the 52nd Annual Tony Awards in 1998, performing "Willkommen."
Beyond Broadway, Hill played Sandra Mescal in director Tim Robbins's film Cradle Will Rock, appearing on its Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. She served as actor, composer, and screenwriter on the film Clear Blue Tuesday, for which the New York Times singled out her performance and described her scene as the best and funniest in the film. On television, she is known for her recurring role as the Pretty White Girl Who Sings Dave's Thoughts on Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show. She was also featured in an HBO Game of Thrones promotional segment in which she performed the series theme on harp.
As a recording artist, Hill has released albums through the Los Angeles label Cleopatra Records, beginning with Harp Town in May 2016. That album features her harp and vocal arrangements of songs by artists including Rihanna, Radiohead, The Beatles, Leonard Cohen, Edith Piaf, Adele, Lady Gaga, Kate Bush, and others. Cleopatra subsequently released her Christmas Harp album in October 2016 and her album of original songs, Girl Inventor, in July 2017. Hill won an Independent Music Award for the song "Stun" from Girl Inventor. Her Celtic album reached number one on the Billboard World Music Chart. She has also contributed harp and vocals to recordings by Martha Wainwright, Jewel, and The Peter Ulrich Collaboration, among others, and served as harpist on the 2006 Off-Broadway cast recording of The Fantasticks.
Hill has performed and recorded alongside a wide range of artists, including Kanye West, Cyndi Lauper, Moby, Sinéad O'Connor, Enya, a-ha, Randy Newman, Josh Groban, and Jewel. She has also performed for Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and members of royalty. She has played harp at the US Open Tennis Championships in the exclusive Hospitality Pavilion across multiple years.
In 2019, Hill debuted a live show titled Harp Oddity: The Music of David Bowie, presenting her arrangements of Bowie songs for vocals and electric harp with her band. That same year, Gridley Records released her single I'm So Glad. She composed original music and sound design for That Play: a Solo Macbeth, which received a Drama Desk Award nomination. She is also the voice and harp behind Tafne, a central character in the Android video game The Legacy of Barubash.
Hill is a science fiction enthusiast and a regular performer at Dragon Con in Atlanta. Her music videos "Lookout, Science" and "Giant Mushrooms" were selected for the Dragon Con Independent Film Festival, and USA Today premiered her science fiction music video "Lookout, Science." Her three electric harps are named V'ger, after the entity in Star Trek; Klaatu, after the character in The Day the Earth Stood Still; and Ylla, after the character in The Martian Chronicles. Her westie dog MacLeod, named for the protagonist of the film Highlander, appears frequently in her music videos. Newsday has referred to her as "the dangerously enjoyable Erin Hill."
