About
Emory Speer Richardson (August 13, 1894 – February 7, 1965) was an African American actor born in Marshallville, Georgia to Edward Sumner Richardson Sr. and Anna Wade Richardson. His career spanned stage and screen across several decades, with Broadway appearances running from 1929 to 1954.
Richardson's theatrical work included a number of notable productions. He appeared in the 1931 production of The Green Pastures in several roles, and in 1946 he portrayed Lykon in Lysistrata, a production that also featured Sidney Poitier in its cast. His Broadway credits encompassed Mrs. Patterson, The Wisteria Trees, Anybody Home, The Leading Lady, and Our Lan', among other productions.
Alongside his stage career, Richardson appeared in American films. His screen credits include Beware (1946), in which he played Dean Hargreaves; Sepia Cinderella (1947), where he appeared as Great Joseph; Boarding House Blues (1948) as Simon; and The Philadelphia Story as Edward. His final film role came in The Fugitive Kind (1960), in which he played Uncle Pleasant, the Conjure Man.
Richardson is survived by a son, Edward Richardson. He died on February 7, 1965, following a prolonged illness, at Sydenham Hospital in New York City.
