About

Emmett Earl Lynn (February 14, 1897 – October 20, 1958) was an American actor who worked across stage, film, and television throughout a career spanning several decades. Born in Muscatine, Iowa, Lynn showed an early aptitude for performance, becoming a song plugger in Denver, Colorado at the age of nine. That work led him to performing in a children's revue, where he was noticed by Gus Edwards, who cast him in a production of Edwards' School Days. Lynn served in the United States Army during World War I before returning to a life in entertainment.

Following his military service, Lynn established himself as an eccentric character comedian in vaudeville. During the 1920s and into the early 1930s, he organized and starred in a series of travelling road companies operating under several names, including the Novelty Players, the Emmett Lynn Musical Comedy Company, and the Emmett Lynn Players. In these productions he was typically billed as "Emmett 'Pap' Lynn" and served as the featured comedian. By 1935, his role had shifted to that of one comedian among several in a travelling musical revue called The Passing Show.

Lynn made his Broadway appearance in 1931, performing in the play Gasoline Gypsies. His work in film dated back even further, having begun at Biograph Studios in 1913. Between 1940 and 1956, he accumulated credits in more than 140 screen productions. Television also became a significant part of his later career, with appearances beginning in 1949 and continuing until his death, particularly in western-themed programming. He appeared in nine episodes of The Lone Ranger during the final decade of his life.

Late in his career, Lynn was cast as Uncle Birdie in the 1955 film The Night of the Hunter, though director Charles Laughton was dissatisfied with his performance and replaced him with James Gleason during production. Lynn died in Hollywood, California, from ventricular fibrillation caused by a coronary occlusion on October 20, 1958.
