About

Emily Rigl was a stage actress born in 1854, with sources differing on whether her birthplace was the Netherlands or Austria. Her father was a ballet instructor, and Rigl trained in that discipline before pursuing a career in performance. She came to the United States in 1866 alongside her sister Betty, whose own acting career ended after she married Philadelphia merchant William Whitney.

Rigl's American debut came in the chorus of The Black Crook at Niblo's Garden, a production in which Betty held a more prominent role. After spending two years with that long-running show, Rigl turned her focus to acting, studying the craft before joining Augustin Daly's company by 1874. Her Broadway career extended from 1866 to 2013 across numerous productions. Early stage credits included Humpty Dumpty in 1868, followed by What Should She Do? in 1874 for Daly, and The Big Bonanza, Saratoga, and Pique in 1875, the last of which featured Maurice Barrymore. She went on to appear in The Galley Slave in 1879, Mr. Barnes of New York in 1888, Devil's Island in 1898, and a 1901 production of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Among her Broadway credits, Rigl starred in Ixion and the play Page Pygmalion, and also appeared in The Spell, Susan in Search of a Husband, and The Money Makers. The Spell, which dates to 1907, marks one of her later documented stage appearances, with records of her activity continuing at least through that year. She also performed in traveling companies in addition to her Broadway work, and appeared in a number of productions alongside Harry Lacy.

One notable episode from Rigl's career involved a performance opposite Joseph Haworth in The Crust of Society, during which she announced from the stage that Haworth had made her life unbearable and that she would not continue. That declaration marked the final performance of the play. The press of the era regularly reported on such incidents involving Rigl, reflecting her standing as a recognized figure in the theatrical world. The Oxford Companion to American Theatre described her as one of the best actresses of her day, a characterization that acknowledged her sustained presence across Broadway and touring productions through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The year of her death is unconfirmed, though records place her active at least through 1921.
