About
Emily Fitzroy (24 May 1860 – 3 March 1954) was an English actress who worked in theatre and film across a career spanning several decades. Born in London, England, she later became an American citizen. Early in her career she served as a leading lady in London under Sir Charles Wyndham.
Fitzroy made her Broadway debut in 1912 and continued appearing on the New York stage through 1922. Her Broadway credits included the plays Just to Get Married (1912), Lady Patricia (1912), Rich Man, Poor Man (1916), I.O.U. (1918), and What the Public Wants (1922), as well as the musical Lady Luxury and the production Never Say Die, among others.
Her screen career began in 1915 with her film debut, and she subsequently built a substantial body of work in silent pictures. The transition to sound brought her a notable credit in Show Boat (1929). Fitzroy continued working in film until 1944, when The White Cliffs of Dover marked her final screen appearance, concluding a film career of nearly three decades.
Fitzroy died of a stroke on 3 March 1954 at the age of 93.
