About
Elric James Hooper, born in 1936, is a New Zealand actor and director whose career has spanned both stage performance and theatrical leadership. Educated at Wharenui Primary School and subsequently at Christchurch Boys' High School, where he studied from 1949 to 1953, Hooper went on to establish himself as a significant figure in New Zealand theatre.
Hooper appeared on Broadway in 1962, with credits including Saint Joan, Romeo + Juliet, and Macbeth. These productions marked his presence on one of the world's most prominent theatrical stages during that period.
Beyond his performing career, Hooper served as artistic director of the Court Theatre in Christchurch from 1979 to 2000, a tenure spanning more than two decades. His contributions to drama and the theatre were recognized in the 1990 Queen's Birthday Honours, when he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire. That same year he also received the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal. In 2001, the University of Canterbury conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Letters degree.
