About

Elliott Sullivan (July 4, 1907 – June 2, 1974) was an American actor born in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Rabbi Solomon Solomon. His Broadway career spanned more than three decades, from 1929 to 1961, encompassing a wide range of dramatic productions.

Sullivan's introduction to Broadway came in 1929 through a walk-on role in Morris Gest's presentation of The Passion Play. That same year he appeared in Red Rust, and in 1930 he took part in a production of Lysistrata. His stage work continued through the 1940s, with credits including Winged Victory in 1943, Skydrift in 1945, and a 1947 production of Brigadoon.

The 1950s brought Sullivan further Broadway appearances, among them Compulsion in 1957, a second run of Brigadoon that same year, and Small War on Murray Hill, also in 1957. He appeared in The Power and the Glory in 1958, followed by The Great God Brown and a second staging of Lysistrata, both in 1959. His final stretch of Broadway work came in 1960 and 1961, during which he appeared in She Stoops to Conquer, The Plough and the Stars, Henry IV Part I, Henry IV Part II, Peer Gynt, The Octoroon, and Hamlet. In addition to his stage work, Sullivan appeared in numerous films throughout his career.

In 1956, Sullivan was indicted for contempt of Congress after appearing as an unfriendly witness before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He was acquitted of that charge in 1961. The following year, Sullivan relocated to London, joined British Actors Equity, and continued acting in productions across Europe. He died on June 2, 1974, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 66.
