About

Elliott Nugent (September 20, 1896 – August 9, 1980) was an American actor, playwright, writer, and film director whose Broadway career spanned from 1921 to 1952. Born in Dover, Ohio, he was the son of actor J.C. Nugent and attended Ohio State University, where he became a classmate and lifelong friend of fellow Ohioan James Thurber.

Nugent's stage work encompassed both performing and writing. His Broadway appearances included the plays Human Nature, By Request, and Dumb-bell, among other productions. He co-wrote The Male Animal (1940) with Thurber and starred in the comedy alongside Gene Tierney. The production became one of his most prominent stage credits. He also starred in The Voice of the Turtle and Without Love, both comedies.

Beyond the stage, Nugent established a career in film, successfully transitioning from silent film to sound film. He directed The Cat and the Canary (1939), starring Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard, and went on to direct two additional Hope films: Never Say Die (1939) and My Favorite Brunette (1947). He also directed the 1942 film adaptation of The Male Animal, which starred Henry Fonda and Olivia de Havilland.

Nugent was the brother-in-law of actor Alan Bunce, known for the radio and television program Ethel and Albert. He died in his sleep at his New York home on August 9, 1980. His papers, spanning 1916 to 1965, are held by the Billy Rose Theatre Division at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
