Elliot Levey is an English actor born on 6 December 1973. Educated at Clifton College, he went on to read philosophy at Oxford University, where he met Emma Loach, daughter of director Ken Loach; the two later married and have three sons together. Levey is Jewish.
Levey's stage career has encompassed work at several of Britain's leading theatrical institutions, including the Donmar Warehouse, the Almeida, and the National Theatre. Among his earlier credits is the 2004 National Theatre revival of His Dark Materials, followed by the Menier Theatre premiere of the musical Take Flight in 2007. At the National Theatre in 2010, he appeared in both the premiere of Alan Bennett's The Habit of Art and in Danton's Death, in which he played Robespierre opposite Toby Stephens. The following year he took the role of Don John in a production of Much Ado About Nothing alongside David Tennant and Catherine Tate. In 2013, he joined the Donmar Warehouse production of Coriolanus, playing the tribune Brutus in a cast that included Mark Gatiss and Tom Hiddleston. In 2022, he appeared in Good at the Harold Pinter Theatre, a production subsequently broadcast as part of National Theatre Live. That same year, he won an Olivier Award for his portrayal of Herr Schultz in Cabaret. He won a second Olivier Award for playing Tom Maschler in Giant in 2025, a production that transferred to Broadway in 2026, marking his Broadway debut.
Levey's screen work includes a 2014 appearance in the television series Ripper Street, in which he played an American journalist. In 2019 he portrayed Judge Jeffreys in the BBC ghost story Martin's Close, and in 2020 he played David Briggs in the miniseries Quiz. In 2021 he appeared in the films The Amazing Mr Blunden and Smudged Smile.
