Ella Mitchell (September 14, 1935 – July 2, 2024) was an American actress and soul singer born in Ahoskie, North Carolina. Her career spanned stage, screen, and concert performance across several decades, and she remained active in the performing arts until late in her life. She died in New York City on July 2, 2024, at the age of 88.
Mitchell's Broadway career extended from 1975 to 1992, with her most prominent stage credit being the role of Evillene, the evil witch, in the Broadway revival of the musical The Wiz, which she took on in 1984. She returned to the character when the production moved to a national tour in 1992. Her screen work includes an appearance in the 1975 film Lord Shango and the role of Hattie Mae Pierce, known as Big Momma, in the 2000 comedy film Big Momma's House.
Beyond her acting credits, Mitchell maintained a long association with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, performing with the company for 30 years. She was also a member of two gospel ensembles, The Gospel All Stars and The Bradford Singers. In September 2000, she was among a multicultural group of performers — including Jojo Mayer, Hyung-ki Joo, Luoyong Wang, Gilles Chiasson, and Angela Covington — who took part in the Peace, Health and Prosperity Concert at Madison Square Garden's Paramount Theatre, an event held in conjunction with the United Nations Millennium Summit.
