About

Elizabeth Lee McGovern, born July 18, 1961, in Evanston, Illinois, is an American actress whose career spans film, television, stage, and music. The daughter of Katharine Wolcott McGovern, a high school teacher, and William Montgomery McGovern, Jr., a university professor, she is of Irish, English, and Scottish descent. Her younger sister is novelist Cammie McGovern. Among her notable ancestors are adventurer William Montgomery McGovern, U.S. diplomat Ethelbert Watts, Admiral Charles P. Snyder, and Congressman Charles P. Snyder. When McGovern was ten, her family relocated from Illinois to Los Angeles after her father accepted a teaching position at the UCLA School of Law, where she attended North Hollywood High School and began performing in school plays. She later trained at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and studied toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama at the Juilliard School in New York City as a member of Group 12 from 1979 to 1981, leaving before completing her degree.

While still a student at Juilliard in 1980, McGovern was cast in Ordinary People, playing the girlfriend of Timothy Hutton's character Conrad Jarrett. The following year brought her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Evelyn Nesbit in the film adaptation of Ragtime. She continued building a substantial film career throughout the 1980s and 1990s, taking on lead roles in Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America (1984), in which she played Deborah Gelly opposite Robert De Niro, as well as Racing with the Moon (1984), She's Having a Baby (1987), The Bedroom Window (1987), The Handmaid's Tale (1990), and The Wings of the Dove (1997). In 1990 she appeared alongside Michael Caine in A Shock to the System, and in 1994 she appeared in the comedy The Favor opposite Brad Pitt. Her film work in the 21st century includes Woman in Gold, directed by her husband Simon Curtis and starring Helen Mirren. In 2018 she starred in and produced The Chaperone, directed by Michael Engler from a screenplay by Julian Fellowes and based on the novel by Laura Moriarty, playing Norma Carlisle, a woman who chaperones the young Louise Brooks to New York City.

McGovern's Broadway career extended from 1989 to 2017 and included appearances in Hamlet, Time and the Conways, and Love Letters. She received a Theatre World Award in 1982.

On television, McGovern has worked extensively in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Her credits include Broken Glass (1996), a BBC series based on The Scarlet Pimpernel in which she played Marguerite St. Just (1999–2000), the crime drama Thursday the 12th (2000), a 2007 episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, a 2007 BBC2 drama Daphne in which she played Ellen Doubleday, and a 2008 episode of Agatha Christie's Poirot in which she appeared as Dame Celia Westholme. That same year she appeared in the BBC comedy series Freezing, written by James Wood and directed by Simon Curtis, playing an American expatriate actress living in Chiswick alongside Hugh Bonneville and Tom Hollander. From 2010 to 2015, McGovern portrayed Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham, wife of Robert Crawley, 7th Earl of Grantham, in the British drama series Downton Abbey, earning both an Emmy Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award nomination for the role. Downton Abbey marked the third time she and Bonneville were cast as a married couple on screen, following Freezing and Thursday the 12th. She reprised the role of Cora Crawley in the subsequent film adaptations Downton Abbey (2019), Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022), and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025). Across her career McGovern has received a Screen Actors Guild Award and three Golden Globe Award nominations in addition to her Academy Award nomination.

After years of studying guitar, McGovern formed the musical group Sadie and the Hotheads, which began performing at The Castle pub on Portobello Road in London in 2008. The band released its debut album I Can Wait, followed by How Not To Lose Things in 2012, on which Downton Abbey co-star Michelle Dockery appeared as a guest backing vocalist. The band's third album, Still Waiting, was released in early 2014, and the group toured the UK and Europe throughout 2013, performing at festivals including the Isle of Wight Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Sadie and the Hotheads has released four studio albums since 2016.
