About

Elizabeth Inglis, born Desiree Mary Lucy Hawkins on 10 July 1913 in Colchester, England, was an actress who worked in British and American film, television, and theatre. The daughter of Margaret Inglis (née Hunt) and Alan George Hawkins, she died on 25 August 2007 in Santa Barbara, California, at the age of 94.

Inglis made her screen debut in the 1934 film Borrowed Clothes, and the following year appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps, playing the small role of Hilary Jordan. In late 1938 she joined the original British stage production of Patrick Hamilton's Gas Light, in which she played the young maid Nancy. The production premiered on 5 December 1938 and ran for 141 performances before closing on 10 June 1939. She and her fellow cast members subsequently recreated their roles in a live television presentation of the play broadcast on BBC Television in 1939.

That same year, Inglis made her Broadway debut in Billy Draws a Horse. In Hollywood, working at times under the stage name Elizabeth Earl, she appeared in William Wyler's 1940 film The Letter, playing Adele Ainsworth, a role for which she became particularly well known.

Inglis married American television executive Pat Weaver in 1942 and retired from acting following their marriage. The couple had two children, one of whom is actress Sigourney Weaver. Their marriage lasted until Pat Weaver's death in 2002. A photograph of Inglis was used in a deleted scene from the 1986 film Aliens to depict Amanda Ripley, the elderly daughter of Sigourney Weaver's character Ellen Ripley.
