About
Elisabeth Neumann was an Austrian actress born in Vienna on April 5, 1900, who built a career spanning nearly seven decades before retiring in the late 1980s. She was the third wife of film director Berthold Viertel.
Neumann began her acting career in Germany during the 1920s. The rise of the Nazi regime forced her emigration to the United States, where she established herself on Broadway and appeared in Hollywood films.
Her Broadway career ran from 1939 to 1947 and included four productions. She appeared in From Vienna and Reunion in New York, as well as the plays Crime and Punishment and The Whole World Over.
Following her time in the United States, Neumann returned to Germany, where she worked with several prominent Berlin theaters, among them Fritz Kortner's Berliner Bühnen. She continued to work as a character actress in film and television, though leading roles in those mediums were infrequent. Elisabeth Neumann died on December 24, 1994.
