About
Elisa Cansino (March 23, 1896 – January 28, 1990) was a Spanish dancer, vaudeville performer, and member of the celebrated Dancing Cansinos troupe. Born in Seville, Andalusia, Spain, she was the daughter of dancers Antonio Cansino and Carmen Reina, and the aunt of Rita Hayworth. Cansino is credited with playing a significant role in introducing Spanish and Romani dance traditions to American audiences.
Her performance career began early. Around 1910, Cansino toured the B. F. Keith Circuit in the United States alongside her brother Eduardo Cansino. Following that period, she returned to Spain to teach dance before coming back to New York City, where she performed with her brothers Eduardo and Angel as part of the Dancing Cansinos.
Between 1916 and 1920, Cansino appeared on Broadway in three productions. Her credits included the musical The Girl from Home, the musical Follow Me, and the revue Doing Our Bit. These engagements placed her among the Broadway performers of the late 1910s during a formative era for American musical theater.
Outside of her stage career, Cansino married Nathaniel A. Jackolo and had a son named Gabriel Cansino. She died on January 28, 1990, in Uleta, Florida, at the age of 93.
