Harold Elliott Makeham was born on 22 December 1882 in London, England, and went on to build a career spanning stage, film, and television. He died in London on 8 February 1956 at the age of 73.

Makeham's stage work brought him to Broadway on multiple occasions between 1930 and 1954. His Broadway credits included Bird in Hand, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and The Lady's Not for Burning. His stage career also encompassed productions in London, among them Blue Comet by Eden Phillpotts in 1926, The Return of the Soldier by John Van Druten in 1928, and Married for Money by Will Scott in 1939.

Alongside his theatrical work, Makeham accumulated an extensive screen career. Between 1931 and 1956, he appeared in 115 films and 11 television productions, working predominantly in character roles. While he took on a limited number of leading roles during the 1930s, he became more consistently associated with supporting parts, frequently portraying harassed officials and henpecked husbands.

Makeham was married three times. His third wife was Betty Shale, a British character actress.
