Born February 2, 1925, in Detroit, Michigan, Elaine Stritch was the daughter of George and Mildred Stritch. She trained as an actress at the New School for Social Research before making her New York debut in a children's play, Bobino. Her London stage debut came in Sail Away. She married John Bay, whom she met while rehearsing a production of Tennessee Williams's Small Craft Warnings.

Her film credits include "A Farewell to Arms," "Cocoon: The Return," "Cadillac Man," "September," "Out to Sea," "Small Time Crooks," "Autumn in New York," "Screwed," "Romance & Cigarettes," and "ParaNorman." On television, she appeared in "Wagon Train," "Tales of the Unexpected," "Trapper John, M.D.," "The Cosby Show," "Head of the Class," "One Life to Live," "3rd Rock from the Sun," "Oz," and "30 Rock."

Among her honors: Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series ("Law & Order," 1993), Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program ("Elaine Stritch at Liberty," 2004), and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series ("30 Rock," 2007). She was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1995.

Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in her honor on July 18, 2014.
