About
Elaine Barrie, born Elaine Jacobs on July 16, 1915, in New York City, was an American actress whose career spanned film and stage. She died on March 1, 2003, in New York City at the age of 87.
The daughter of a traveling salesman named Louis Jacobs, Barrie was a student at Hunter College when she first encountered actor John Barrymore by visiting him in the hospital under the pretense of conducting a celebrity interview for a class assignment. She later stated that her interest in Barrymore had begun years earlier, in 1931, when she was 16 and saw his film Svengali. The two married in 1936 in Yuma, Arizona. The marriage was turbulent, and they divorced in 1940. Barrie was Barrymore's fourth and final wife.
Her Broadway career included an appearance in My Dear Children in 1940. In addition to her stage work, Barrie appeared in several films. In 1937, she became the subject of a lawsuit brought by E. K. Nadel seeking to prevent her from appearing in Dwain Esper's How to Undress in Front of Your Husband, with the plaintiff arguing that the film's title had been copyrighted by Sherill C. Coben.
Following her acting career, Barrie relocated to Port-au-Prince, Haiti around 1958, where she worked as a handbag designer. She remained in Haiti for a period before eventually returning to the United States.
