About
Eileen Dennes, born Eileen Amhurst Cowen on 1 February 1898 in Dublin, Ireland, was an actress whose career spanned stage and silent film work across the United States and England. She died on 22 January 1991 in Hungerford, Berkshire, at the age of 92.
Dennes began her stage career in the early 1910s and appeared on Broadway in 1916 in the musical Betty. The following year she traveled to Hollywood, where she secured work at the Empire All Star Film Company. Her first screen role was Ethel Fielding in The Unforeseen (1917), a production in which she appeared alongside Olive Tell. She and Tell worked together again that same year in Her Sister.
Dennes subsequently relocated to England in pursuit of further opportunities. Director Cecil Hepworth signed her to a contract, and her first English film appearance came in 1919, when she played Bessie Saxton in Sheba, starring Alma Taylor. Under Hepworth's direction she went on to appear in Once Aboard the Lugger (1920) and Mr. Justice Raffles (1921), the latter giving her a starring role. She reunited with Taylor in The Pipes of Pan (1923), and her final collaboration with Hepworth was Comin' Thro the Rye, also released in 1923.
Following her work with Hepworth, Dennes appeared in The Sins Ye Do (1924), directed by Fred LeRoy Granville. Her last screen credit came in 1925, when she played Lucy in The Squire of Long Hadley alongside Brian Aherne.
