About
Egon Brecher was an Austrian-born actor and director born on 18 February 1880 in Olomouc, Moravia, Austria-Hungary, in the region now known as the Czech Republic. The son of a professor, Brecher began studying philosophy at the University of Heidelberg in Germany in 1900 but abandoned his academic pursuits to pursue a career on the stage.
Brecher spent the first decade of his professional life performing on provincial stages throughout Germany and Austria. From 1910 until 1921, he worked in Vienna under the direction of Josef Jarno. During this period he also served as chief director of Vienna's Stadttheater. His engagement with Jewish cultural life ran alongside his mainstream theatrical work: in 1907, together with Siegfried Schmitz and members of the student club Theodor Herzl — including Hugo Zuckermann and Oskar Rosenfeld — he founded a short-lived initiative to perform modern Yiddish theatre in the German language. In 1919, he co-founded the Freie Jüdische Volksbühne in Vienna, a Yiddish theatre established alongside Isaak Deutsch, Jacob Mestel, and others, which operated until 1922. He had made earlier visits to New York in 1906 and 1911 to perform in that city's Yiddish theatre before permanently relocating to New York in 1921 to work on Broadway.
Brecher's Broadway career spanned from 1924 to 1932 and included productions of The Good Hope, The Call of Life, John Gabriel Borkman, The Master Builder, and The Cradle Song, among others. During the latter half of the 1920s, he served as both stage director and leading man for the theatrical company headed by Eva Le Gallienne.
In the late 1920s, Brecher relocated to Hollywood, where he initially appeared in foreign-language versions of American films. His Slavic accent proved versatile, earning him roles both heroic and villainous in the espionage films of the 1930s and 1940s. In the mid-1930s he appeared in a series of classic horror films, including The Black Cat, Werewolf of London, The Black Room, Mark of the Vampire, and The Devil-Doll. One of his most substantial screen roles came in the 1946 film So Dark the Night.
Brecher died on 12 August 1946 in Hollywood, California, of a heart attack at the age of 66. He is interred at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood.
