About

Edythe Elliott, born Edythe Fletcher on July 14, 1886, in San Francisco, California, was an American character actress whose career spanned the stage and screen across several decades, with work concentrated primarily in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. She died on April 9, 1978.

Elliott's roots in performance ran deep. Her parents were involved in vaudeville, and she grew up in San Francisco, the city where she would take her first significant professional steps. By 1917, she had established herself as the leading lady of the stock company at the Wigwam Theatre in San Francisco, a position that marked an early milestone in her stage career.

Her Broadway work took place between 1929 and 1934, during which she appeared in three productions. In 1929 she played Pansy Horner in Salt Water, and in 1931 she took on the role of Florence Blandy in After Tomorrow. Her final Broadway credit came in 1934, when she portrayed Mrs. Thomas Carter in Mother Lode. These roles reflected a sustained presence on the New York stage during a concentrated five-year period.

Elliott's personal life also had a public dimension. In 1906, she married fellow actor Charles "Royal" Elliott in Oregon, in a ceremony that took place before a large audience. Following her stage career, she transitioned to film work, making her screen debut in 1935.
