About

Edwin Milton Royle (March 2, 1862 – February 16, 1942) was an American playwright, composer, and book writer born in Lexington, Missouri, who died in New York City. His Broadway career spanned nearly four decades, from 1892 to 1930, encompassing work as both a performer and a writer across plays and musicals.

Royle authored more than 30 produced plays over the course of his career. Among his Broadway credits were the plays Her Way Out, The Squaw Man, and Her Husband's Wife, as well as the musicals Moonshine and Marrying Mary. The Squaw Man, which premiered in 1905, stands as his most recognized work. The play was adapted into a Hollywood film in 1914, co-directed by Cecil B. DeMille, a production historically noted as DeMille's first feature film. The California Motion Picture Company separately adapted another of Royle's plays, Unwritten Law, into a film released in 1916.

Royle married actress Selena Fetter in 1892, the same year his Broadway career began. The couple had two daughters and, after 1910, made their home in Darien, Connecticut. One of their daughters, Selena Royle (1904–1983), built her own career as a stage and film actress.
