Edward MacKay was an American actor who worked across stage and film and also directed films. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he built a career that spanned Broadway productions, stock company work, and early motion pictures.
MacKay's stage career included a run on Broadway lasting from 1903 to 1923, during which he appeared in a number of productions. His Broadway credits included Pasteur, La Tendresse, Swords, Civilian Clothes, and Mother's Liberty Bond. Earlier in his stage career he performed as a leading man with the Crescent Stock Company.
His work in film brought him to Jesse L. Lasky's Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1915, where he served as a leading man. His screen appearances included Clothes in 1914, in which he played Richard Burbank, The Clue in 1915 as Guy Bertram, The Secret Orchard in 1915 as the Duke of Cluny, and Life or Honor? in 1918 as Sidney Holmes.
MacKay was married to Julia MacKay in 1900. The couple separated around 1904, and she filed for divorce in 1906. His second wife was Alice Coon Brown MacKay, a former drama critic for the Ohio State Journal in Columbus, Ohio and the daughter of Arthur Brown, a United States senator from Utah.
MacKay was a member of the Actors' Equity Association. By 1930 he held the position of treasurer of the Actors' Fidelity League.
