About

Edward Locke (1869–1945) was a playwright and performer born in Worcestershire, England, who built a career in American theatre and vaudeville. He began working as a theatre and vaudeville actor while still a teenager, and went on to write vaudeville sketches as well as full-length plays.

Locke appeared on Broadway in 1903 in the play My Lady Peggy Goes to Town. His writing career produced a substantial body of work spanning several decades, beginning with Fighting Fate in 1905. His most successful play, The Climax, written in 1909, was adapted for film on two occasions — first in 1930 and again in 1944, though one of those adaptations departed significantly from the source material. The Case of Becky, from 1912, was likewise the basis for a film production.

Among his other works, The Revolt, written in 1914 and featuring child actor Rosana Logan, was adapted the following year by World Pictures as The Revolt. The Silver Wedding appeared in 1913, and The Bubble in 1915. His later output included The Dancer in 1919, The Woman Who Laughed in 1922, Mike Angelo in 1923, The Love Call in 1927, and 57 Bowery in 1928.
