About
Edward J. Le Saint was an American actor and director born on January 1, 1871, in Cincinnati, Ohio, of Belgian and German ancestry. He received his education in Cincinnati and, before entering the entertainment industry, held a position in a railroad's auditing office.
Le Saint began his performing career with a stock theatre company in Cincinnati, where he worked for several years before spending approximately fifteen years acting in prominent road shows across the United States. His Broadway appearances, for which he was billed as Edward J. Le Saint, spanned from 1904 to 1929 and included three productions: Robert Emmet in 1904, The Big Fight in 1928, and Houseparty in 1929.
Beyond the stage, Le Saint built an extensive career in film during the silent era and into the sound period. He acted in more than 300 films and directed over 90, with his directorial work concentrated between 1912 and 1916 and accounting for approximately 50 films. He was particularly associated with roles of authority, portraying judges in more than 30 credited and uncredited appearances, including a bit part as a judge in Too Many Women in 1934. His film industry affiliations included the Kinemacolor Company of America, the Selig Polyscope Company, and Universal Pictures.
On December 25, 1913, Le Saint married Stella Razetto, and the two remained together until his death. He died on September 10, 1940, in Hollywood at the age of 69 and was buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
