About

Edward Abeles (November 4, 1869 – July 10, 1919) was an American stage and film actor whose Broadway career spanned from 1896 to 1918. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he worked as both a lawyer and a reporter before turning to acting. His stage debut came in the play Alabama, in which he played a small southern boy role, and his early career included appearances in musical productions as Anna Held's juvenile man.

Over the course of his stage career, Abeles appeared in approximately two dozen Broadway productions. His credits included The Dictator, the musical The West Point Cadet, Man and Superman, and Brewster's Millions, in which he starred in the 1906 Broadway production. He also appeared in the 1918 Jerome Kern musical Oh, Lady! Lady!!, playing the role of Spike Hudgins.

Beyond the stage, Abeles appeared in eight films between 1914 and 1918. He was among the founding members of Famous Players–Lasky, and his film work included a 1914 screen adaptation of Brewster's Millions directed by Cecil B. DeMille, as well as The Making of Bobby Burnit (1914), The Lone Wolf (1917), and Opportunity (1918).

Abeles died on July 10, 1919, of pneumonia at Dr. MacWilliam's Private Sanatorium in New York City at the age of 49.
