About

Edna Mayo, born Edna Lane on March 23, 1895, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American actress who worked in both stage and silent film. She died on May 5, 1970, in San Francisco, California, where she had settled in her later years.

Mayo's performing career began on the Broadway stage, where she appeared in productions between 1906 and 1914. Her Broadway credits included the play Help Wanted and the musicals Girlies, The Merry Widow Burlesque, and The Social Whirl. In 1914, she departed the stage for Hollywood to pursue film work.

Her screen debut came that same year in Michael Arnold and Doctor Lynn, opposite Robert Z. Leonard. The years 1914 and 1915 proved particularly active, with Mayo appearing in twenty-two films across those two years. In 1915, she also contributed an article to Picture-Play Weekly examining the differences between stage and film makeup techniques.

Her 1916 output included four films. For The Return of Eve, the production traveled to the Midwest, filming metropolitan sequences in Chicago and rural scenes near the Dells of the Wisconsin River in northern Wisconsin. Around the same period, Mayo filmed location scenes in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for The Misleading Lady. In The Strange Case of Mary Page, also from 1916, she wore gowns valued at $10,000 that had been designed by Lady Duff Gordon, known professionally as Lucile.

More than a year passed before Mayo took another role. In 1918, she played the female lead in Hearts of Love, which proved to be her final screen appearance. She retired from acting following that film.
