About
Edmund Francis MacDonald (May 7, 1908 – September 2, 1951) was an American actor born in Boston who built a career spanning stage, radio, and film. He had one brother and began developing his craft through stock theater work on Long Island before transitioning to professional stage work.
MacDonald made his Broadway debut with Getting Even in 1929, launching a stage career that continued through the mid-1930s. His subsequent Broadway appearances included Her Tin Soldier in 1933 and I, Myself in 1934, with his credited stage work spanning the years 1929 to 1934.
Beyond the stage, MacDonald established a presence in radio broadcasting. In 1938 he appeared as a regular on Hollywood Showcase, a variety program in the old-time radio format, and he also held a recurring role on Box 13, the radio series starring Alan Ladd.
The bulk of MacDonald's later career was devoted to film, where he worked primarily as a character actor in B pictures. Among his screen appearances were Call of the Canyon in 1942, The Mantrap in 1943, and Detour in 1945. His final film credit was Red Canyon, released in 1949.
MacDonald died on September 2, 1951, at the age of 42. He suffered a stroke at his home and was subsequently hospitalized, dying of a brain hemorrhage at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Los Angeles. He was interred at Los Angeles National Cemetery.
