About

Edmund Breese (June 18, 1871 – April 6, 1936) was an American stage and film actor born in Brooklyn, New York, to Renshaw Breese and Josephine Busby. His Broadway career spanned from 1900 to 1935, and he also worked as a book writer for the stage. In addition to his theatrical work, Breese appeared in more than 120 films between 1914 and 1935, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the silent era of American cinema.

Breese made his stage debut in the summer of 1895 at the Opera House in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where he portrayed Adonis Evergreen in My Awful Dad. His early career included work with a stock company at the Castle Square Theatre in Boston. Among his Broadway productions, he appeared alongside James O'Neill in The Count of Monte Cristo, which is listed among his credits as Monte Cristo, and took on roles in Romeo and Juliet and The Love Leash. He starred in Just a Wife and appeared in a number of other productions over his decades-long Broadway career. Additional stage credits include The Lion and the Mouse (1906) with Richard Bennett, The Third Degree (1909) with Helen Ware, The Master Mind (1913) with Elliott Dexter, the World War I era play Why Marry? (1917) with Estelle Winwood and Nat C. Goodwin, and So This Is London (1922) with Donald Gallaher.

Breese's film career began in 1914 with Edison Studios. He is particularly remembered for his role as the advice-giving German businessman at the opening of All Quiet on the Western Front. His final stage appearance was in Night of January 16th, which ran from September 1935 to April 1936. Shortly before that production closed, Breese developed peritonitis and died on April 6, 1936, at the Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled. Funeral services were held on April 8, 1936, at the Church of the Transfiguration in New York City, after which his body was cremated. Breese was married twice; his first wife was Genevieve Landry, and at the time of his death he was married to Harriet Beach.
