About

Edith Pearl Fitzgerald (1889–1968) was an American playwright, book writer, and screenwriter born in Burnside, Kentucky. One of twelve children of John Fitzgerald and Dora Roberts, Fitzgerald built a career that spanned both the Broadway stage and Hollywood film productions.

Her Broadway work took place between 1921 and 1926 and included appearances in the plays Wake Up, Jonathan!, Chicago, and Many a Slip. During this period she also collaborated on stage writing with Robert Riskin, who was her boyfriend at the time; among the plays they co-wrote together was Her Delicate Condition. The two eventually relocated to the West Coast, where their relationship ended. Despite press reports suggesting otherwise, Fitzgerald and Riskin never married.

Fitzgerald's career extended into screenwriting through the 1930s, during which she contributed to a number of film productions. Her screen credits include Today We Live (1933), Brief Moment (1933), Ex-Lady (1933), The Painted Veil (1934), The Wedding Night (1935), Small Town Girl (1936), My American Wife (1936), and Within the Law (1939). The title Many a Slip also appeared as a film credit in 1931, alongside Illicit that same year.

Outside of her professional work, Fitzgerald was married to Elmer Griffin, a prominent tennis player, and she herself became a tennis champion. She died in 1968 in Charlotte, North Carolina, following a brief illness.
